problem changing runlevel

I changed my runlevel in /etc/inittab to '4' then I used it like for about a month now, But when I put it back to '3' X wouldn't start. How can I view the errors? I had to change it back to '4' so that I can be here...

Usually the errors are output to the screen when you use startx and X doesn't start. It didn't give you any errors on the screen when you used startx?
