I have Slack 9 setup on my rig (default desktop Gnome 2.2) but I'm having trouble setting my HP Deskjet 850c Parrallel printer. (found no settings in Gnome to set it up so logged onto KDE) What happens is that when I go to print manager and select CUPS there is no option to choose LP; only print to fax, pdf etc are there. If I select LPR/lprng then an lp option appears and theres 4 drivers I can choose from, none of which work.
thanks,
Rob
ps I have parrallel port turned on to "yes" in my kernel so I know its not that.
Sorry to re-awaken this thread, but I am having a similar, but slightly different problem.
I have a print server running SuSE 8.2 and cups. I am running Slack 9.1 on my laptop. I can go into the Printer setup, choose to use CUPS as my printing system, add a new printer, select CUPS server, enter the IP address of my printing server and it finds it.
I finish setting up the printer, go through the "print test page" and everything works. And with any KDE specific app (I'm running KDE) such as KWrite or Konsole, I get the correct list of printers and I indeed can print to my networked printer. But if I go into a non-KDE app such as OpenOffice or Firebird, none of the printers show up. I tried doing the apsfilter SETUP program and that didn't seem to make any difference.
Just so I am clear (), I'm trying to print remotely, not directly off of my laptop (the joys of a wireless card).
Oh, BTW, when I had SuSE 8.2 on my laptop prior to Slack 9.1, all apps, regardless of KDE-specific or not, could see and print to this printer. Not a knock on Slack, just trying to get in the fact that I think the server is configured correctly.
Hey guys, I have a real tackle for you guys to look at. As stated, I am a huge fan of Slack and run it on my server. However, I recently noted that I was growing more and more bored with Windows XP on my main computer. So, I am getting ready to go out and install Slack on my computer. I have tried this once before and overall had good results, but there is one thing I just can't get to work.
I have a Lexmark Z45 printer that I am rather fond of and it works absolutely fine on Windows. However, when I attempt to install Slack and it notes the printer, the only Lexmark it seems to understand is the Z23 which has long since been retired. I am in the process of getting Slack 9.1 in hopes that it will have more support and other things to try...I hope this isn't a bad idea.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to make slack print to my printer? I am open to lots of suggestions.
