Printing Help: SCX4100

I recently purchased a Samsung SCX4100 (linux compatible) multi-function printer. The printer must be connected via USB per the documentation for linux. Thus far, no joy in pirinting...here is basically what I have attempted.

1. chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.cups and did /bin/bash ./rc.cups start from /etc/rc.d

2. installed samsungs linux drivers...this didn't go smoothly until I went to the comamnd line and installed the driver from the models directory selecting the scx4100. After that I recevied a success message. Apparently there is a GUI front end but I could not launch it.

3. KDE
- Went to the print manager and selected CUPS

- Wasn't sure what to select for the interface tried local and CUPS
- Allowed printing for all users

PROBLEMS:
When I try to print a test page, most times it is spooled but no print. Oftentimes, the printer which was started moves to a stopped state. So I need some help debugging this...the printer usb interface is 1.1 and my usb port is 2.0, do I need to slow the setting down? If so, how. Any other basic printing troubleshooting tips?

Thanks.

Try to open in a web browser this url when running cupsd:
127.0.0.1:631

This port is defined usually in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
This might help u setup your printer

Unhappy Also experiencing SCX_4100 problems

I have also attempted installing the SCX-4100
I am using a recently installed Suse 9.3 (OpenSuse).

I started with downloaded latest linux driver package from Samsung.
Tried running (as root & user) the .../Linux/install.sh and the mfpinstall. These crashed with an error early without installing anything. Later browsed deeper to .../Linux/models/scx4100/. From there I ran scx4100.install. This gave me an installed printer of scx4100-series. During the reboots CUPS identified and asked to install the printer, so I let it. This gave me a second printer scx4100. A bit of trial and error and the scx4100 works. Deleted the scx4100-series. I think CUPS did it's usual config from the loaded scx4100.ppd file. You can dig this out of the .ss named tar.gz files on the download
.../Linux/models/scx4100/scx4100.ss/usr/share/cups/model/samsung/scx4100.ppd

So the printer works well now even though Mozilla doesn't yet see it. There is a nice iconned Samsung MFP Configurator on the KDE desktop but it shows a tantalising screen and then dies. Xsane and kooka both die after the first screen.

I'll try some more and post here any successes. Anyone from Samsung want to reinforce their good name.

P.S. some past Samsung printers like the 2150N have been a dream to set up under CUPS, in my experience.

(Stupid) newbie in need of help

I've been following this thread with the hopes of connecting my Samsung SCX-4100 printer.

I just installed Fedora Core 4 on my PC four days ago and am completely new to Linux.

I know how to open the terminal and have executed a few commands on it but I'm having trouble figuring what / how to install the printer's drivers from reading this thread.

Could somebody give me a step-by-step direction (all spelled out, commands and all) as to how to connect my printer?

Thanks

There are some tantalising threads over at http://www.linuxprinting.org/pipermail/samsung-list/
but you'll have to hunt around. I am still wrestling with the scanning.
