Question ppp connects does nothing and disconnects

Hey there everone! I am going crazy trying to get my internet connection working. It worked before with kppp then recently I reinstalled slack and kppp didnīt work so I downloaded some dialing scripts to try out and one of them worked! So I was happy... now recently I have been trying and neither method works.

I connect then it does nothing for about 15-20 seconds and disconnects.

Mar 11 16:29:43 jimdaworm connect[1095]: Connected at 45333
Mar 11 16:29:43 jimdaworm pppd[842]: Serial connection established.
Mar 11 16:29:44 jimdaworm pppd[842]: Using interface ppp0
Mar 11 16:29:44 jimdaworm pppd[842]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
Mar 11 16:30:11 jimdaworm pppd[1144]: Device modem is locked by pid 842
Mar 11 16:30:15 jimdaworm pppd[842]: Connection terminated.
Mar 11 16:30:15 jimdaworm disconnect[1196]: Hanging up modem...
Mar 11 16:30:23 jimdaworm pppd[842]: Exit.
Mar 11 16:30:49 jimdaworm connect[1205]: Initializing modem...
Mar 11 16:30:59 jimdaworm connect[1205]: Connecting to 908200020 [attempt 1/1]

When I was trying with KPPP I got exactly the same error as this guy was getting.

But I donīt use AOL and it worked fine before! Have I missed somthing out of my kernel or somthing strange?

Thanks for your time!

I think I will do it the tried and tested way.... format and reinstall. Probably one of these scripts I was trying out screwed somthing up.

So a re-install and use pppsetup.

Just installed Suse 9.0 (Checking it out) I was using all these gui tools (trying to get used to them) set up the connection and had EXACTLY the same problem!!

Had a bit of a deeper look into things and Suse runs Wvdial (Another dialer I tried)

The moral of the story for anyone desperate enough to be reading this is I set Wvdial to īDumbī or īStupidī log in mode and it connects fine.

Hmmm... I'd be curious to know what pid 842 was.... I would have tried to kill it after scoping it out in ps......

Hey jong357 now that you point that I too am interested...

How would I go about

(a) finding out what pid 842 is/was

(b) kill it?

I am foggy on manually managing pids but I do remember reading somthing īcontrollingī them.

In KDE does KPPP send the proper commands to your modem? try to query your modem and see if that is the problem .. but I doubt it...

Hey ProtoformX its sending the right commands to my modem but I just gave it a go and it give me an error that ppp0 is missing!

I had a look and its not there in the /dev/ directory.

I am not really sure what makes it and when this ppp0 file... how and I put it back??

Oh yeah dialing with the pppsetup ppp-on and off still works fine.
