Unhappy portmap module help

hi all, again.

i made a post a bit ago about fam (file alteration monitor) not
working for me, though it was installed when i installed dropline
gnome. i browsed the net and rummaged through various forums,
whereafter i discovered that the portmap module / service was
needed in order for fam to work. soon i found it being mentioned
in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2, though when i checked /sbin/, there was no
rpc.portmap to be found. it seems i did not install the portmap
module / service when i installed slackware. i guess i have to
compile this module / service from the kernel source, but i have
not a clue how to do that. or perhaps portmap can be acquired
somewhere without having me compile it myself?

any help is greatly appreciated, since i am getting a bit annoyed
with having to manually refresh when i modify, create, etc. files
in nautilus.

The rpc.portmap program is in the slackware/n disk set. Most everything that has to do with networking is in the "n" disk set tree. It is called portmap-4.0-i386-2.tgz.

The simplest way to install would be to mount your install CD. Then from a console prompt;

installpkg /mnt/cdrom/slackware/n/portmap-4.0-i386-2.tgz

Use your mount point for /mnt/cdrom in above.

thank you!

that did that trick. i now have fam running and it updates to show
changes. now to figure out how to make it more responsive (i.e.
instant / near-instant update without hogging resources).
