Well, I recompiled it with gtk3, and both with and without the patch. The behaviour has changed, but it still segfaults! Now the Glib error messages don't appear until I do something in the window, but as soon as I click on anything, it still segfaults!
I'm going to sleep on it tonight, because my brain is starting to hurt!
Many thanks for your efforts, and when and if I find the cause, I'll post it here!
Orbea: Thanks for the assistance! Yes, I know I didn't recompile it with debugging enabled, that was just a quick and dirty trial in case it pointed to the culprit quickly!
Well it did help, it did show this is a gtk and/or glib problem, but of course the more debugging you can do the more likely someone will understand why its crashing and how to fix it. That said in the end you may have to go report this to an upstream issue tracker.
I've made a little bit of progress. Following the latest -current updates, all three machines are now behaving exactly the same - segfaulting on gmime. According to the pan website, support for gmime-3 is incomplete, so it looks like a pan bug rather than anything to do with Slackware.
They do give detailed instructions on how to send them backtraces, so now that I have consistency across all my machines, I will file a bug report with them.
Same problem here with gmime segmentation fault on both x86_64 and x86 systems. Pan in apparently not using gmime 3.05 properly. I roll my own pan compile, and even compiled gmime from source...same problems!
I've just received the following response to my bug report:

Thanks for taking the time to report this.
As stated in the release notes, gmime3 port is incomplete and experimental, so
crashers are to be expected. Patches welcome.
Since gmime3 broke API compatibility with earlier versions, distros should try
to provide compat packages as a temporary solution for yet to be ported apps.
So they've given it a high priority, but in the meantime is anyone aware of any compat packages?
Further update: The developer responsible for the gmime upgrade has managed to reproduce the issue! As anyone who has ever done maintenance will know, reproducing a fault is half way to fixing it - hopefully! ;-)
