As you know I'm in the market for a new laptop. I saw various offerings of laptops with HDD storage with 16 GB Intel Optane memory.
I intend to use Windows in dual boot with Slackware, and Slackware would be my main driver and OS. I intend to run -current. If I have to choose the OS with whom I would use the Optane memory, it would be Slackware and not Windows.
Is there a way I could use Optane to my advantage in Slackware? Again, I intend to run -current.
The Optane Memory stores applications and data you access often,
while less-frequently used data stays on the hard drive.
looks like it operates similar to a hybrid hdd that has that sdd cache on it to boost the files it uses most.
so I'd say it looks like it figures it out for you.
If you're wanting to use one of the newer ones as a SSD, it'll work fine with -current as long as you go 7th gen or newer Intel (AMD not supported).
If you're wanting to use one as a cache device, then again, it'll work with -current with the same requirements, but you'll have to set up the caching manually. It will be seen as a normal block device (ssd) and you'll need to configure it to be used as a cache device AFTER installing to your other device.
