Nvidia driver lead to segfault

Hi guys,
I've installed Slackware 13.1 on a rather old PC. Basically everything works. I need a bit of graphical acceleration so I have to install the driver for the nvidia graphic card (GeForce4 MX440SE).
I've tried the nvidia Linux-x86-96.43.16 driver resulting in a segmentation fault when launching X. Changing the setting to vga=normal (as explained in another thread) didn't help.
Then I've downloaded the 96.43.17 driver (a beta release: I've found the link googling around), same result. Again vga=normal didn't help.
Anybody knows how to tackle this issue?

Sorry, it was my fault. vga=normal really works. I forgot to run lilo after modifying lilo.conf
