Question Number Pad Problem - Hardware or Software???

About a week ago, I dropped my keyboard; about a week ago, I installed a new monitor. I had to do some adjusting to my xorg.conf to get my monitor to work, and I don't think that I did anything to the keyboard section.

When I want the NumLock on and press the button, the LED lights up...but the number pad behaves exactly as if NumLock weren't activated. It is the same when the NumLock is off.

I did drop the thing, and I looked inside and couldn't see too much out of the ordinary. I just wanted to know if there were some Linux or X setting that I might have overlooked which would override a NumLock. Do I need a new keyboard?

Well, did the numlock work before you dropped it ? Did you save your xorg.conf ... if not try starting with the xorg.conf-vesa ... that one should definitely detect it properly. Maybe try running 'xorgconfig'. If all those possibilities are eliminated ... I'd say it may be broken.

Something similar happened to me... my numeric pad didn't work at all (The light worked but it didn't get any input). I'm pretty sure it wasn't the keyboard because it worked on my other computer. Now I've reinstalled Slack so I really don't know what could be the problem. Sorry.

Check the Keyboard section of your xorg.conf and check if you have a Xkblayout or something like that enabled.

It was actually a KDE setting. I [for some reason had set so that the mouse could be controlled by the number pad. Why? Don't ask. Well...that solved it. I just happened to notice that the number pad worked in the console.
