no startx Nvidia-(open)-kernel

Hello Slackers! Recently I was trying to install the Nvidia kernel module from Slackbuilds, although, I don't really know if I did right by installing the nvidia-open-kernel (new open-source), instead of the nvidia-kernel (proprietary) because I found this thread https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/...drivers/233188, to solve an issue with the computer not resuming after putting it to sleep (the monitor & keyboard wouldn't power on, but the computer would turn on). I installed the driver, which is what caused the problem.

Can someone help me undo this? But please know that my understanding is that of a newbie.
Also, I have the issue of putting my computer to sleep and not waking up. This can definitely be secondary.
  • Instead of startx loading due to inittab 4, console loads up, so I do have access to the OS.
  • I am getting errors like xauth missing with the user.
  • Not sure what other information you can need.

Not a direct answer, but are you trying to hibernate with hybrid-sleep?
That never worked for me, no matter which version of NVidia driver.
The machine doesn't show any display output when resuming.

I install NVidia driver by running their ".run" package.

Hibernate works every time, the machine goes to sleep and resumes OK.
The only problem is that most times the machine hibernates
on the second or third attempt.

All this happens only with NVidia driver. Nouveau works flawlessly.
The machine hibernates at the first attempt and hybrid-sleep works OK.

Hey Paulo2, I was using the Sleep option under KDE. I was going to try the Hibernate option when I couldn't log in anymore.

Given the steadily increasing number of "nvidia.com" people in Linux Kernel Changelogs, it looks like nvidia is very serious about providing an open source in-the-kernel high performance driver. While it is disconcerting that, especially in Linux where we can get by with older hardware longer than our Windows counterparts, initially they will only support cards new enough to have Ray Tracing. if I understand correctly. However some here may find a new home with kernel v6 when nvidia releases their new efforts.

Both suspend and hibernate are working OK, tested in KDE with an outdated -current install (last update was Oct 27).
I will update and test again.

What happens if you install the NVidia driver from the ".run" file?

Paulo2, I was able to get startx to come up again! I installed a new version of the open-kernel module & driver, version 525.53 using Slackbuild. The obstacle was finding this information here: https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/

I shall put my computer to sleep and see if this solves that issue, as well. Thank you for helping me get this far!

Putting my desktop to Sleep results in the screen and keyboard not coming up, and when using Hibernate, the computer is booting as if I had powered it off. I am not sure if there's something else causing this issue. Is someone familiar with this type of issue?

By "open kernel module" do you mean nouveau? or the slackbuild version of the proprietary nvidia driver? While it may be a bit more work to use the NVIDIA-0foo.run script installer from runlevel 3, there are several advantages. It will tell you if there are any missing or deficient requirements and it will uninstall any failed instances as well as announce success. Do be sure you have updated bootloader by re-running lilo.

I installed this https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...a-open-kernel/, which is the new open-source kernel module that was given by Nvidia.

I tried this today, https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...nvidia-kernel/ and I had the chance to test it once using the Sleep function and it woke without an issue. I shall verify it, however.

I shall look into NVIDIA-0foo.run, thanks for this.

Just FTR the new Open Driver 520.56.06 is not only specifically designed for cards that support Ray Tracing, it is noted that it should be considered "alpha quality" for workstation and GeForce applications. It's VERY new and not exactly "ready for prime time" on even moderately older GPUs. FWIW my GTX 1070 Ti from EVGA still works best with an older 470x driver. 520 does not help and causes some artifacts in some applications. Newest isn't always "best-est".

Try sel4ecting card type etc, here https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/ and do a manual search and check out the card-specific results. Make the .run file executable and run it as root from runlevel 3 and follow your nose (it's helpful information and prompts). It's easy and after you see and feel the difference you might want to lookup "coolbits" customization entries to monitor and control performance and fan speed/temperature in nvidia-settings. It's really good.

@enorbet, that worked! I used the nvidia-kernel (proprietary) driver and it's working. Sleep works but Hibernate does not, I might have to try some of the other older drivers as you mentioned. Thank you!
