No sound... =/

Hi, I got some problems with my sound, it is gone. At boot I receive this message in KDE:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

And then I try to run alsamixer from I get this:

Code:
bash-3.1$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
bash-3.1$
And here is some more commands for info...

Code:
bash-3.1$ dmesg
 found.
Intel ISA PCIC probe: not found.
Intel ISA PCIC probe: not found.

It goes on pretty long with the same "Intel ISA PCIC probe: not found." and that also happens at startupp, before when I had sound to... Dont know why..?

When I run alsaconfig it cant find any soundcard...

After the sound had disapaired I installed some drivers for the soundcard and after that it worked some a little while but when I rebooted it was gone again, and then after installing the drivers.. no sound...

I also did something that might have been very stupid, I don't know for sure, but I use slapt-get and I installed the alsa-drivers from their that it not updates... I don't know if this is a bad thing or how bad it is, but however it would be nice to know why it no should be updated..? Is it the same all the time and just changes, and the sound card is not changes....?

Btw this is my computer:

Code:
bash-3.1# uname -a
Linux Headquaters 2.6.21.5-smp #2 SMP Tue Jun 19 14:58:11 CDT 2007 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
bash-3.1#

I had similar problem on my desktop computer with Slackware 12 while it was still Slackware-current. The thing that was causing this was pcmcia service. Check in /etc/rc.d with $ls -l if rc.pcmcia has executable permission. If is is, remove it with #chmod -x rc.pcmcia.

About sound... are you using snd_hda_intel? It is strange that sound worked and now it is not. First downgrade alsa packages you have upgraded and check /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. There are some intel sound modules blacklisted. Experiment, comment those lines and then rerun alsaconf.

@ak-87

rc.pcmcia had executable permissions but I removed then now, but still the same with

Code:
Intel ISA PCIC probe: not found.
I took I look at the blacklist but didnt realy know what to look for but I did this;

Code:
bash-3.1# cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist | grep int
# Modules used to run a wireless adaptor as an access point. These
blacklist snd-intel8x0m
blacklist intelfb
# built into the kernel or loaded with an initrd already.
bash-3.1#
But I have never downgraded any packages so how should I do that? In the easyest way...

@ssslackw

No I have not tried an another soundcard... But I have been running Linux on this computer for over half a year with good sound, so I know that it "can" work...

Code:
blacklist snd-intel8x0m
. Downgrade all alsa packages you have upgraded with original alsa packages from Slackware 12.0 DVD or official repo. Use upgradepkg command.
