Exclamation No route to host on telnet to router in failsafe.

Firstly, I am running Slackware 14.1 x64. I have a open-wrt router (LibraryBox) that I'm trying to reset the root password on. I have successfully set a static IP using wicd and booted the router into failsafe mode. But when I go to telnet into the router it says:
"telnet: connect to address 192.168.1.1: No route to host."

Why is this and how to I fix it? If this is wrong forum please tell me which door to use.
Also, the reason why I need to reset the root pass is I set it using a copied password from KeepassX but when I've then logged out and tried to log back in it doesn't work.

Hi inflatable, and welcome to LQ,

I've done this many times, and I guess you've basically done the right things, but in the wrong order: wicd probably tried to be "helpful" by resetting your Slackware box's interface when it saw the link to eth0 go down. You can reboot the router to failsafe mode first, then set the static IP on your Slackware box, then telnet from the Slackware box to the router. But to be certain of success, it is probably better to stop all the wicd processes completely before you set the static IP manually (use ifconfig, not wicd, obviously).

(... and AFAICT NetworkManager is even more "helpful" than wicd when we don't want to be "helped"...)

Thanks 55020,

How do I go about setting this up? I've now tried to do it this way:

Code:
/etc/rc.d/rc.wicd stop
ifconfig eth0 down
-boot router into failsafe-
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2
telnet 192.168.1.1
With no success.

So you'll need to go through the usual network debugging steps...

ifconfig -a
netstat -rn
ping 192.168.1.1
traceroute 192.168.1.1
