No net after compiling 2.6.8

After compiling kernel 2.6.8 ... the net was gone . I tried to configure my eth0 card with ifconfig but an error message appears no such device .... What should I do?

What is your output for :
/sbin/lspci | grep -i net

And for :
/sbin/modprobe -l | grep drivers/net

do you know your ethernet card? if so, just google for linux drivers, download and compile .
