No more xorg.conf : Good but also Bad ?

Sorry if this was well covered here when most up-to-date Slackers moved to 13.0, but I have just jumped from 12.1 to 13.1. Generally very happy that I do not have to think about xorg.conf as I always found the structure of this conf file a tad confusing. However if I do need to (for example) change my video driver (I might for example want to try the nvidia driver from NVIDIA) or configure my touchpad - how do I do this ?

I understand that xorg.conf can still be created. If I do so, do I have to put all the stuff in that used to be there or can I just add the stuff I need to make the changes I am looking for?

Thanks and sorry again if this was all covered fully nine months ago.

You don't have to put everything in there, for example:

Code:
Section "Module"
	SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
	EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    Option "UseEvents" "1"
    Option "Coolbits" "1"
EndSection
is what I use.

Easy way to install NVIDIA-Linux* driver...
From an other system or live distro download the driver from Nvidia and place it into your /home folder...boot your Slack to run leveel 3 and at the prompt type CD /home ... then type ls if you want to see it...then type sh NVIDIA-Linux ... press tab key to automatically complete the entry... hit return and if you are lucky it will install...sometimes it refuses to install because of kernel issues...

ps I have a problem with 13.1 in that I have no mouse or keyboard in 13.1 although 13 was just fine... !

OK, installing the nvidia driver from NVIDIA inc created an xorg.conf file that it needed and so I have a starting place from which to play with my touchpad settings as well.

Thanks for these v quick responses.

Adding the nvidia driver fixed another problem (suspend - restart cycle) that had been bugging me for a week - so I think I will be sticking with this particular piece of non-free software...

I never hear of runlevel 3, I suppose I am a nOOb. I download NVidia's script for driver and put in /usr/local because I put all that kinds of things there. Then exit window manager back to command prompt and run script as root and create xorg.conf. Then I open xorg.conf in text editor and cut everything but this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

Then I notice my KDE gets flasher and when I move windows they become clear.
