no keyboard recognized on slack 9 install

I'm trying to test the waters of linux for the first time with slackware based on a recomendation from a friend that slackware is the way to go. I can get to the boot portion that says press enter bare.i or just enter for default settings. The problem comes in when i can't type anything.

system,

Amd Athlon 2.2
usb keyboard
usb mouse

this is after i've tried to use my kvm switch and realized that it probably wouldn't work. They are ps/2 though. What are my options or have any of you run into this?
