New user questions...

Hi out there!

I’m quite new to Linux. I used to have before some years Red Hat 7 but I’ve been away from Linux a long time and since then I had no relationship with Linux.
Now I installed again Slackware 10.2 and as it’s logical I have some questions about some subjects.

I suppose that those I’m going to ask have been already asked by previous newbie users so a link would be really appreciated, if not answering directly to my points.

The problems I have are:

My USB flasdisk isn’t recognized…
Neither ZIP drive…

When I was installing Slackware I’ve chosen the USB mouse but I’d like also to use the laptop’s thinkpad. Any idea?

How could I configure the sound card?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

if you just got slackware I suggest making a new kernel and going through all the options checking those you need. If the soundcard just isn't recognized you can fix that in the sound section of the devices area in the configure do-hickey (you'll also probably want alsa). Or if the soundcard is recognized and you just want to turn the volume up alsamixer will do that and you can save the configuration with "alsactl store" (as root). I'm also pretty sure there are things to configure the thinkpad also.I suggest these things because usually the first thing I do is try to compile a new kernel with my system because it tends to run faster.

Well first things first, welcome to linux questions.
So is this installed on a laptop?
As you have stated most of your questions probably have been asked before so I suggest that you make use of the search feature of this site(I am on here daily but usually only have to post every few weeks because of this wonderful tool)
Run as root
alsaconfig
to make sure your card is recognized, then run as normal user
alsa mixer
then run as root
alsactl -store
to save settings for your sound card.

Could you please explain why you think this...type
dmesg
and look through there for entries related to these devices. As well try as root.
lsusb
to look for usb devices
lspci
will list pci devices.
Good luck and welcome aboard!
Hope I didnt post any wrong info.

You mean installing Kernel 2.6 after the Slackware installation?

I've managed finally to configure the soundcard and usb flash disk. I'm trying now to configure the ZIP Drive...
Also, from where can I configure that I have two mice, usb one and the laptop's thinkpad.
At last, any documentation on how installing glibc-2.3.6?

Thanks again in advance!
