New program for configuring X

I've taken an old program called Xconfigurator and updated it for use with Xorg and Slackware.

XorgTest can be run from the command line or from an xterm while running X. it will walk you through the setup and allow you to test the configuration before writing the config file, or even back up and try again.
You#ll need slang and popt installed from Slackware, plus newt, kbdconfig and mouseconfig which you can get from my site.

Packages are here:

I used to include Xconfigurator in one of my distros and decided to update it for Xorg. plus, it sets of GUI login on runlevel 4 instead of 5. I really liked it because of the ability to test and backup at will. Plus, mouseconfig does a pretty good job of detecting mice.

Xconfigurator was based on the sources for xf86config, but made it easier to use. I'm still working on this some as it still has an extra widow or two which may not be needed. But, it writes an xorg.conf file nearly identical to what xorgconf does.

Smile

It was working to some extent it found my card and was probing for my mouse and wanted me to select its type

and then the programmed aborted and I had this in console

XorgTest: Also - make sure you are running this program as root
XorgTest: Check permissions of /etc/sysconfig/mouse.
XorgTest: Critical error reading /etc/sysconfig/mouse.

not a clue what the sysconfig folder is supposed to be but just giving feedback to help

Sorry, I also install kudzu for use with hwsetup. It creates the /etc/sysconfig directory. Try creating it manually and run again. I just tried this againa nd it worked okay.

... and by installing all those packages, we're already halfway SuSE/Redhat linux... which might not be to everyone's taste.

Of course not. It's an alternate way of doing things. I like (for newbies especially) the way it lets you test the configuration before proceeding, wheter run from the command line or while running X. Since it starts a separate session ti lets you test new resolutions without destroying your current setup.

Yeah, sorry for coming down on you Gilbert - I was refering to hwdata and kudzu which are from those big guys, not your modified Xconfigurator.
