From the ndiswrapper wiki:

Prerequisites:
You need a recent kernel at least 2.6.6 or 2.4.26 with source

So you could install the 2.4.31 kernel source from CD#1 and you should be dandy.

thank god I made an image.

I didnt have any USB mouse working at all.

I installed the latest testing kernel all went well. USB mouse works; but no wheel

I read the sticky again "how i do it all"; but no luck.

I found some other posts here that said you need to tell xorg.conf to have two devices.

I did that reboot...computer restarts...i get to "starting x" and then nothing. Cant boot to either kernel.

I just loaded in vector soho 5.1 and the same mouse works in USB port and I get a wheel. Going to compare xorg files...but vector is so buggy I cant open up KDE explorer sigh.

I'm trying to patch vector so I can just copy the xorg over... Frown

cwwilson721:

Thank you for the post of your xorg.conf file. I tried your suggestions but still no luck.

Vector didnt even have a server section, I dont know why.

If I hit control + alt + del linux will at least reboot the pc...and it says "no possible fix for your hardware has been detected" or something similar to that.

Another point of mention is when I boot up; I see as Linux is scrolling it's start sequence check, it says :

input: PS/2 Touchpad on isa0060/serio1
then it gets to Starting gpm: /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/mouse -t ps2
Starting up X11 session manager:
then nothing.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Call off the Troops! I got it working!

I saw that in a different thread here that somene said to re-run their install scripts and choose USB mouse.

Well I didn't know how to re-run them; so I just re-installed slack and chose USB mouse. With the mouse actually plugged in while I re-installed. Then I had no touchpad.

Installed the 2.6 kernel and blam-0! I got a working USB mouse w/wheel and the touchpad too. External keyboard works in the ps/2 slot too so far.

So I'm gonna run my updates and image this bad-boy and see if I can't attack the wireless now.

Thanks all for your help and advise to date.

First GJ, it's all about trying, reading, thinking and retrying.
You can rerun the install scripts at anytime with
Code:
pkgtool
the scripts are under "setup".

in the words of homer simpson..."doht!"

all i had to do was run package tool! so i reinvented the wheel.

well, that is good to know as I plan to load my desktop pc with slackware in the very near future.

i'm backing up this hard drive as image right now; then plan to undertake upgrading the kernel to 2.66 or later to try out the ndiswrapper to get wireless on this laptop.
