Networking with Slackware

I have just installed for the first time Slackware 10.0 in my computer, and I haven't internet. When it asked me for the lan configuration, I specified my network name, my group, and that I wanted an IP by DHCP.

Did I do something wrong?
What can I do to fix it?
Could someone please help me?

Thank u all.
PS: I have a Cable-Modem connected to a router.

lets assume the ip address of your router is 192.168.0.1, then you need to check if you can ping it

ping 192.168.0.1

If you can, then there's a direct connection to it, which is good. Set your Gateway to the ip of the router.

Also, you need to see if your DNS settings are right or not. Test it by trying to ping google's ip address

ping 216.239.39.104
or through website http://216.239.39.104

If you can connect, then your problem was that you didn't set up your DNS settings, to do so, edit the /etc/resolv.conf and enter your dns settings

nameserver <ip_address>

This is the message I get:

ping 192.168.123.100
connect: network is unreachable

What can I do?
Does Slackware needs me to install any kind of a driver of the Lan device?
(My lan device is integrated in the motherboard).

Thank u.

well i guess that's an ethernet connection.

look at the output of " #lspci " to see what nic you've got.
then look with " lsmod " if the module is loaded.

maybe you can paste the output here ? ( well....you've got no nic.... )

run 'ifconfig' as root. Do you see your ethernet device? Next: Did you edit rc.modules to load the module for your ethernet device? If you answer no to the first question, and yes to the second, run 'dhcpcd eth0' as root. If you have to edit rc.modules to load the module for your network card, you have to run this command. Then it should work. Make sure you have the right module for your network card.

After your ethernet device has been activated you'll need to run "ifconfig eth0 <insert ip adress here> netmask <insert netmask here> up" to give it ip and netmask.

Then you'll be able to ping your router.

How can I do for the computer to do this work for me?

THANX.

you can put that modprobe command in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.
