Need help with K3B not seeing DVD/CDROM

When I try to run K3B setup and enter my root password it will not accept it and I keep getting this message in console, then when I try to point K3B to my CDROM it does not want to see it.

k3b: CRITICAL
k3b: PROBLEM: cdrdao will be run without root privileges
k3b: DETAILS: It is highly recommended to configure cdrdao to run with root pr
ivileges to increase the overall stability of the burning process.
k3b: SOLUTION: Use K3bSetup to solve this problem.
k3b:
kdesu: WARNING: Daemon not safe (not sgid), not using it.
kdesu (kdelibs): [process.cpp:263] Running `/bin/su'
kdesu (kdelibs): [su.cpp:193] Read line <Password: >
kio (KDirWatch): KDirWatch-1 emitting dirty /home/99f150

K3B says to enter root password to enter setup, but when I do, nothing happens. It might be a permissions problem but I dont know. Anyone have any idea?

Is your user in the group `wheel`? If not add that group to your user and try again.

Did you click 'apply' to make the changes in the 'k3bsetup'?

Make sure that you are at least in user, cdrom group as a minimum, that took care of it for me.

K3b needs to alter some of slackware's default permissions. It does also offer the option to make a burning group should you so desire.

This happened with me too.

The solution: just add the user to the groups cdrom, disk and burning,
and you wont have this sort of problems anymore.

happy skacking!

Of the groups mentioned, cdrom is the only one that I
have my user in, and iirc the only one that matters
for K3B. I don't have a burning group on any computer
in my LAN, or that I've built; and I've been using
Slackware since version 9.0. I don't know about with
Slackware 11.0, but with previous versions, if the
CD/DVD didn't have correct perms, K3B told you and
made a suggestion of what to do. Which should be a
function of a properly coded GUI config app.

After reading your thread I ran k3bsetup on a fresh
Slackware 11.0 install. I immediately got a cdrdao
error, which asked me to login as root. I did so, and
after perhaps 10 seconds the K3B window popped up to
have me select the speed of my burning device. I did
so, and did not change anything to do with the group
information in that dialog window.

Though I normally use CLI for burning CD/DVD/VCDs, I
decided to test K3B to see how it works.

First, I chose a CD which I wanted to archive. With
K3B I chose the Copy CD option, but only made an
image rather than copying from one drive to another.
It worked fine, and this is the K3B debugging output:
Code:
System
-----------------------
K3b Version: 0.12.17

KDE Version: 3.5.4
QT Version: 3.3.7
Kernel: 2.6.18.2
Devices
-----------------------
TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552U US06 (/dev/hdc, ) at /dvd2 [CD-R; CD-RW; CD-ROM; DVD-ROM; DVD-R; DVD-RW; DVD+R; DVD+RW; DVD+R DL] [DVD-ROM; DVD-R Sequential; DVD-RW Restricted Overwrite; DVD-RW Sequential; DVD+RW; DVD+R; DVD+R Double Layer; CD-ROM; CD-R; CD-RW] [SAO; TAO; RAW; SAO/R96P; SAO/R96R; RAW/R16; RAW/R96P; RAW/R96R; Restricted Overwrite]
Next, I got a blank CD and made a copy, so we can use
this CD without concern of scratching. Using Tools >
Burn CD Image, this was the debugging output:
Code:
System

cdrecord command:
-----------------------
/usr/bin/cdrecord -v gracetime=2 dev=/dev/hdc speed=40 -dao driveropts=burnfree -eject -data /server2/ISO/Rosetta-Stone-application.iso
To burn the same CD in CLI, I use this command:
Code:
cdrecord -v -eject driveropts=burnfree dev=/dev/hda /path/to/file.iso
It burns faster than in K3B, and uses less resources than the GUI.
And with the 2.6 kernel I burn as a normal user, not root.

Ok, thanks for the info, k3b now sees the writer but now I get an error saying cannot find growiso executable....What does that mean?

Anyone have an idea of what " cannot find growiso executable " means?
I have already installed DVD-tools.

I fixed the growiso problem, but now k3b does not see the writer I have added the user to all groups and that does nothing. I keep getting this same error.

mount:could not determine filesystem type and non was specified.

I did dmesg | tail and it shows this:

bash-3.1# dmesg | tail
ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue (0)
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 0
FAT: unable to read boot sector
UMSDOS: msdos_read_super failed, mount aborted.
ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue (0)
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 0
FAT: unable to read boot sector
ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue (0)
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 64
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=16:00, iso_blknum=16, block=32

any hints as to why I keep getting these messages?

What kernel are you using? If 2.4 then you need to add this to your /etc/lilo.conf.

append="hdc=ide-scsi"

That goes at the top just under the start of the global section. It may already be there. The other thing to check is where /dev/cdrom is linked to. Issue this command:

ls -l /dev/cdrom

If the output is /dev/hdc or similar, you may need to change the symlink. So issue this as root:

rm /dev/cdrom

and then this:

ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom

This is all only relevant if you're using the 2.4 kernel and not the 2.6 kernel.

Thank you very much, that did the trick.
