need help on upgrade to 9.0

hi..
i have / /boot /home /usr/local

i expect i can save most of my work(compilation/coding)
because i have seperate /home and /usr/local

what happens to /etc and some files under /lib/modules such as nvidia and alsa

back up /etc to somewhere, say /usr/local/etc and replace after upgrade to 9.0
and compile nvidia and alsa again?

as far as i can tell, that's all i needed.. what else can be there that needs manual modification?

thank you
