mount usb drive s13

Hi I have just installed slackware 13 and I can not mount a usb drive from my own logon. I have created a mount point - /mnt/usb - and added an entry in fstab -

/dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb auto defaults 0 0

when I try to mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb I get "only root can do that"

I go to root and the same command is successful. I can access it from my user. I changed the owner and group of /mnt/usb to me. All I want to do is plug the stick in and use it (pretty much like I used to do in s12.2 from memory). Any ideas?

What filesystem does the USB drive have? Try to mention that instead of "auto". Also put "user,rw".

"user" in options allows normal users to mount the device.

"defaults" in your options list in your fstab line includes "nouser", which means that non-root users can't mount the device (read the man page for mount). You want to make sure you have "user" in your options list (as well as any other options you need, like "rw" for example).
