Mount devices in KDE

Hello, I'm using SuSE 10.1 at the moment and want to switch to slackware hence I grabbed the current tree and experimented with it a bit.

How can I mount media in KDE? It alway says it needs HAL to mount something but my devices are in fstab so why do I need HAL and what actually is HAL?

From what I have read. You have to re-compile KDE with HAL enabled as Slackware does not compile it by default.

That or you can mount your devices manually. Also see this other thread:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=477803

Oh and make sure you have a search in this forum before asking questions or people might get snarky.

Welcome to the forum

It's not like people get this way for nothing, but I think it's logical not to ask a question which has been asked and answered many times already and would save you and the people some time. So, welcome to LQ and feel free to "abuse" the Search button and others if needed. Good luck.

I already read this thread. But I don't want HAL. Can't I just enter my devices to fstab to keep it plain simple and mount them from KDE without getting this message concerning HAL?

I only get this message when I try to open a device that has not been mounted with Konqueror. So mount the device first and you won´t get the error.

Please excuse my ignorance but how do I do that? I seems there is only one point where you can mount media in KDE.

Slackware Newbie,

don't take offence, its just that HAL is a burning topic just now...you weren't to know

right click on kde desktop, Create New>Link to device

you dont need hal for that
