Yeah, definitely. NTFS is probably the way to go.

You might want to find out WHY it's getting marked dirty, because that shouldn't happen unless the drive is disconnected in an unsafe manner... like not unmounted on Linux before unplugging, or not "safely removed" from the little arrow+device icon in the systray in windows.

I know ... but for a removable drive that is used frequently between a number of comps by a number of users , this is something taht I can't avoid. Also, loss of data is not SUCH a big concern (it is a concern but not so major ).

If you have the ntfs tools installed, you might want you check out the ntfsck page
