I usually use a run level 3 and then startx to get to my desktop, but decided to checkout lxdm. Have to say it's pretty nice. Easy to configure and I can use any picture I want as a background for it.
Good to hear feedback on this, as I don't think I have heard of any other slacker using lxdm. I'm actually considering hacking xdm to see what I come up with!
