liveslak disabling keyboard/mouse on GUI login after install

Recently installed liveslak's slackware64-live-current.iso and everything was good from bootup through to the install using setup2hd. after that if I boot from the fresh installation I get stuck right at the GUI login screen as my keyboard and mouse are completely turned off. booting off a rescue disk and changing the inittab to skip the GUI on startup brings me to a text console where both the keyboard and mouse work without problem. as soon as I attempt to get into X, the keyboard and mouse cease to work. any suggestions?

So... what do the logfiles tell you? X.Org writes its log to /var/log/ and you will have a session log as well.
Simply "mouse and keyboard do not work" is not much to go with.

apologies for not giving much details on this, but it the X.Org log was empty and /var/log/messages did not give much info

I was able to boot and run X fine after replacing the stock kernel with a custom one I had built another partition - this one had 14.2 upgraded to -current
