Linux Kernel 5.x

I was wondering if Patrick or Eric was going to package up a development kernel for us to test out? I know we can do it ourselves but it was just a question.

I never package kernels, and will never do so. That is Patrick's domain.

I understand that, technically I was looking for a configuration file for the 5.x kernels. I didn't mean it like that. I have used a 4.x kernel config but it doesn't seem to be inputting the correct configuration for the x64 bit huge kernel.

Worked for me. I used the 4.x generic config and added compiled-in ext4 support so that it could boot without an initrd.

While you can just load up a config with menuconfig, you really should run through oldconfig first, because categories may have changed and you may need to say Y to some things. The kernel build system is pretty good about enabling dependencies, but evidently not perfect.

Check some important things over with menuconfig after that, and make whatever changes you want etc.

Ya i forgot about make oldconfig, I am so used to make menuconfig then saving just because I leave everything to the way Patrick has it in the huge kernel config. I have done that since I started using Slackware back in 2002.

So i take it with the olddefconfig you didn't receive the net symbols misconfiguration after saving the new configuration file for compiling?

While Eric's "How to Build a Kernel" page is ancient (2.x kernel ancient) it is nevertheless still an excellent guide and works just fine even with 5x kernels. His guide, of course, includes the important "make oldconfig" but also notes how to run "make xconfig" from the User Desktop. This can be especially helpful when making a version leap since it is fairly effortless to see the Description/Help entries always shown by default in xconfig... no keystrokes needed.
