I'm not entirely sure. If I remember correctly, using anything different from GTK2 was causing painful slowdowns. And it didn't matter if I used the repackaged official binaries, Eric's build or if I built on my own.

There were some small speed differences between the different builds, but still, the most noticeable difference was switching to GTK2 and disabling OpenGL.

Does the repackaged SBo build (i.e. a repackaged version of the original binaries) default to GTK2 and OpenGL disabled? And does Eric turn them on? I didn't have to play with any environment variables with the repackaged version to get it to run acceptably and use 20x less memory..
