LCD refresh


I am a little stuck on the horizontal and vertical refresh rates in xorgconfig for my notebook. I know that it can only do 60hz from 800x600 to 1280x1024. So what should I choose for the refresh rates? Or could anyone suggest a manual range for Horizontal and Vertical ranges that should apply for both LCD monitors and notebook displays.

Ah ok thanx, but there is still an issue. I can only get 1024x768, plus not only that, KDE shows refresh at 50Hz, and I can set it to 52Hz, but not 60, plus it doesn't even keep the settings. As far as refresh, does this mean that LCD display will always show 50Hz instead of 60? I have hardware acceleration for graphics. I am using NForce Go series on my notebook, but there are no linux driver for it, so I must use the quadro driver: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-9631.html

However there are two side effects, I can't get 1280x1024, and now for some reason it affects alsamixer, at startup I get this message...

Plus, the driver has rearranged my xorg.conf a bit...Also I am using the 2.6.17.13 kernel for slackware11.0, recompiled for SMP. Everything else seems to work fine. Except for the weird buttons on my HP notebook that controls sound volume, and "quicklaunch" buttons, but thats another issue for another thread.

Not an xorg expert but maybe it is using the first 24bit item listed. Change the order to list 1280x1024 first.

No sure what to do as far as the refresh rate at the moment. Maybe rem out the modelines.

Cool, I will try that. Ok, as far as alsa is concerned. I fixed it. I reran alsaconf, and had it redetect my sound, and now when I run alsamixer, it shows Master and PCM, and not just Master like before. I reset the settings, saved it, and now when Linux starts up, there is no more error messages about alsa.

Well, I changed xorg.conf accordingly, and still nothing above 1024x768... I also commented out the modelines... No effect.

Nvidia on a laptop seems tricky (to me)
Lately nvidia's been kinda buggy. Take a look at my post here.
I suggest you take a look at nvnews forum from time to time.
This helped me:

Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
Try adding that after:
Code:
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "Nvidia (generic)"
Monitor... Default depth...
