Keymapping issues in X/KDE

Using Slackware 13.1 here, I have managed to load a kmap file(loadkeys *.kmap) that remaps keys so that I can type with one hand. This works great when I am not in X. When I start X and login to KDE the new mapping goes away and I am back to QWERTY. My questions is, how do I get X to use the kernel keymap and not it's own mapping? Thanks ahead of time for the help.

I don't think that you can.

xmodmap is I believe what you'll have to use to change X's view of the keyboard. KDE may have a front-end for it, I don't know.

I've not heard of .kmap files. However, I use my own custom keyboard layout which I created by adding to a file in /etc/X11/xkb/symbols. In previous versions of X I had to edit some other files in the /etc/X11/xkb/rules directory to have KDE recognise my layouts, but I don't believe that I needed to do so in the last view Slackware releases.
