Keyboard issues

Hello folks:

I've recentyl switched to slackware 10.0 and so far i'm loving it, of course there were several issues from installation to post configuration which i've successfully managed (to my surprise )
Anyway, there are some basic things left, almost all of them keyboard related.
As background i must say that my keyboard have worked flawless with most distros i've tried
it's a compaq usb KB.

The issues are as listed:

*The keyboard response is very slow when i type in (i know there must be a simple solution for this)

*I can't fully use caps lock and num lock keys: this is very strange, the caps lock led is lit all the time even though i'm typing in lower case (right now), i can't switch it on/off and the same but opposite goes for the num lock led: it's turned off all the time, can't switch it on.
when i push both caps lock and num lock key, they 'activate' allowing me to type in upper and lower cases or numbers respectively, but this freezes a few seconds the computer.

has anybody had a similar problem... ever?

just to add another question...how can i get rid of those annoying 'messages of the day' anytime i login?

Thanks in advance

To adjust keyboard response within Slackware, and assuming you're using KDE, go to Settings > Control Center > Keyboard. That ought to do it.

As for the message(s) that are displayed after you log in, that would either be the "message of the day" (aka motd) which is in /etc/motd, or the "fortunes" program. You can change the motd just by editing that file, but I'm not certain how to disable the fortunes program off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure a quick Search would turn up the answer though -- J.W.

honestly.... why would you want to disable fortune??
apart from it being "annoying"

Thanks for your replies

@ J.W.: thanks, it was indeed fortune and now i know hot to disable it .
About the kb slow respose, i've already tried those settings from kde, and it just work ok in kde, but i'm usign fluxbox, though (still slow).

@ DaWallace: it's not that annoying if it shows up just once, when you login. In my case, fortune appears every time i open aterm, so it's easier for me to know how to disable it at all.

And I still have the kb leds (caps/num lock) problem...

Alright, after a couple weeks of using slack and my kb that way i got used to (almost). Then recently, i tried mounting both my usb camera and my nokia 3300, and guess what? they didn't work, actually when i connected those usb devices the keyboard got disabled.

it was obvious that it was an usb related problem from the very beggining, so I started playing around with /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and other init scripts, and finally, i resolved it with the help of the precious 'search' feature of this forum

from /etc/rc.d/rc.modules (as root) i uncommented:
/sbin/modprobe usbkbd
and
/sbin/modprobe usb-storage

and activated hotplug
chmod u+x /etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug

That did the trick

now everything works fine. kb leds, kb response, usb camera and the phone

Regards
