Kernel compiling and Mouse: HELP!!

Hi all,

I have installed Slackware 9.0 on my Toshiba Laptop 5000-105 a few days ago. My mouse is a standard USB mouse (Logitech).
Superb distro. Easy and great results, love it!

However, I need to install ALSA to get my soundcard to work and that requires apparently a proper Kernel tree built. As advised on the ALSA howto, I set off to recompile the kernel.

Got kernel 2.4.20 and went through the usual steps.

When rebooting, I noted the message
Quote:
modprobe: can't locate module mousedev
Then when gpm starts, the following message
Quote:
/dev/mouse: No such device
And obviously, when trying to startx
Quote:
Xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/mouse
No such device

Mouse1: cannot open input device
Preinit Failed for input device "Mouse 1"
Fatal servor error
Failed to initialize core devides
The key module mousedev doesn't seem to be found. But why? Or is there something else?
Can someone help me and tell me how to sort it out?

Thank you in advance.

Missing Mouse

I suggest that you go through the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone
routine.

Does /dev/mouse exist? If so, what is it a symbolic link to? I suspect that it
should point to /dev/usb/mousex where x corresponds to your mouse usb port
number.

Does /lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/input/mousedev.o exist? If so, what is
its creation date? In addition to mousedev.o you will need some usb drivers but I don't know them by name.

Does /etc/modules.conf contain any references to "mouse" or "mousedev"?

It is possible that something is missing. It is also possible that everything
is in place and something went wrong in your kernel compile so that mousedev.o and/or your usb drivers exist but do not index into the kernel correctly.

Looks like you missed a few things in your kernel config. Check the following settings in your .config file.
CONFIG_USB_HID=
CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT=
CONFIG_USB_HIDDEV=
CONFIG_USB_KBD=
CONFIG_USB_MOUSE=

Thanks to you both for your answer.
I suspect that I left out some settings in make menuconfig.

So I took my old .config file and recompile the kernel which worked out fine.

Now I just need to figure out of to make my soundcard works....
