kdm will not start in kde 4.4

Hi all,

KDM does not start after upgrading my Slackware-current 32bit to KDE 4.4 using Alien Bob's packages. In syslog I get

Code:
Feb 22 10:15:02 shpritsz kdm: :0[3838]: Received unknown or unexpected command -2 from greeter
Feb 22 10:15:02 shpritsz kdm: :0[3838]: Abnormal termination of greeter for display :0, code 1, signal 0
Feb 22 10:15:02 shpritsz kernel: Unpin not necessary for f6643200 !
I followed the instructions on http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/, so I upgraded/installed-new everything in x86/deps/ and x86/kde/

What am I missing? (I used the exact same procedure on a 64bit Slackware-current installation and everything works beautifully)

Cheers, Leon.

gcc mismatch?

I diagnosed it a bit further. When trying to login to KDE using XDM I get the message that 'kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails'. Starting kstartupconfig4 from prompt gives:
Code:
bash-3.1# kstartupconfig4
kstartupconfig4: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.5)
kstartupconfig4: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.10' not found (required by /usr/lib/libQtNetwork.so.4)
So it seems I got myself in a gcc version mismatch here?

Recently I upgraded gcc (I thought gcc-4.3 to gcc-4.4 would be an 'allowable' upgrade), but I ran into problems and I decided to downgrade to:
Code:
bash-3.1$ lspkg gcc
gcc-4.3.3-i486-3
gcc-g++-4.3.3-i486-3
gcc-gfortran-4.3.3-i486-3
gcc-gnat-4.3.3-i486-3
gcc-java-4.3.3-i486-3
gcc-objc-4.3.3-i486-3
gccmakedep-1.0.2-noarch-2
Should I compile the KDE-4.4 packages myself with my current gcc version?
I would be very grateful for a suggestion how to fix this

as you've already said, it looks like kde 4.4 requires a newer version of listdc++ (which is part of gcc). i wouldn't go into the hassle of compiling kde packages myself, although i'm usually fond of self-compiling packages. the only advice i can give is to avoid upgrades. maybe it's just me but i'll never get them working. backup, reformat and reinstall. the overhead of this procedure depneds of you partitioning of course .

Yeabut... this is a Slack box! That's why I steer away from Windows...
But I get your point, I was thinking along the same lines. Just hoping/expecting there must be a more 'elegant' way of solving this.

I had issues with kdm (kde 4.3.4) not starting on two machines after i upgraded to current, for me, at least, it seems current is broken right now. I could do 'init 3' and again 'init 4' in tty 6 to launch kdm manually.

yeah i know, i usually use a slackware version till it's really time to move on (i.e. i went straight from 10.2 to 12.2) so i just don't really bother with upgrades but i'd like to hear people with experience on that matter, too.
