I am sorry if you've taken offense at my last comment, none was intended. My primary objection is
to the LQ moderator describing me as "LQ Newbie," in spite of the fact that I have been a member of this forum for some 4 years or so. I have not asked many questions, I admit, nor
have I had anything to add to the replies to questions from others.

Again, please accept my sincere apology for what was obviously an error on my part.

Fair enough, and consider this an apology for my reaction to it; as my posting history will show, I'm not a big fan of having words put in my mouth if I didn't say them :-)

using, and have been unable to locate it elsewhere.

Question: Where is SMART Package Manager?
I now the feeling... :-)
but a simple fix..

Start a Consol
in my case at the prompt write su- like this
and you will be asked for password:
Then you could get use off the program installpkg to install lets say mysql-1.2.3.tgz

gnuru@amd:~$ su -
password:xxxxxx (enter)
change to the location were youre file is
cd ..
cd /home/gnuru/saved/files
root@amd:# installpkg mysql-1.2.3.tgz
