I have a fresh install of slackware 10.1
I have upgraded to kernel 2.6.11.9 w/ no problems.
The KDE 3.2 on the slackware installation CD's works fine,
but I can't upgrade it to 3.4.
I downloaded the slackware version from kde.org.
I have tried "upgradepkg" from runlevels 1 & 3
I have tried pkgtool from runlevels 1 & 3
I have tried reinstalling slackware with kde and then "installpkg"
I have tried "pkgtool" to remove the 3.2 and then "pkgtool" to install the 3.4.
I have tried "pkgtool" to remove the 3.2 and then "installpkg" to install the 3.4
After each try at installing 3.4 run "xwmconfig", select "KDE" & the run "startx".
X then starts up, I get the tan/grey screen like KDE is trying the then I get the following error:
"Could not start kdeinit. Please check you installation"
The x error messages refer to a library file liblol0 or something not existing and about four or five things trying unsucessfully to contact it.
you can just open it with notepad.
Only thing is, that some of the formatting is probably messed up.
If it's too much to fix it by hand, you could use an editor like UltraEdit, which can read unix formatted files properly.
I think I scewed up.
The files are there on my floopy but are empty.
I saved them to the floppy while in Gnome.
Could you guys just tell me how ya'll sucessfully upgraded to KDE 3.4?
Do you have to go to KDE 3.3 first?
I will try again to bring the error files tommorrow.
It's funny. I mounted the floppy last night and could read the file from it in linux, but now in windows it is blank.
ChangeLog 2005-04-12:
Recompiled the cyrus-sasl package to fix the kio_smtp authentication problem.
The kdepim-fix-imap-resource-type.diff patch is included in this kdepim.
You must install the cyrus-sasl package for Kmail/Kontact
Theses packages seems to work also on slackware -current (2005/03/10)
If you have any problems with installing this release, please send an e-mail to
Jean-Christophe Fargette : kde@fargette.com
Installation (For people that doesn't want to read the Slackware documentation...)
First remove the old packages with the "pkgtool" utility. There are all the kde* packages, arts, kdevelop, koffice ( and quanta if you are using <= KDE 3.2.x).
Then install the new packages with pkgtool or installpkg with_package_name.tgz
I'm at work and my slack box is at home.
I just downloaded from another source and will try it again tonight.
If it again fails I will post the error messages tomorrow.
I screwed up saving them as a text file last night and can't post them today.
I can't give anymore info today.
I wil let you know what happened tommorrow.
Thanks
Now I have my error messages for you guys to look at.

I,searched the machine for that lib file or directory and it don't exist in my machine.
Using the Slackware Package Browser I mentioned in my post - you can use it to browse all the packages for every Slackware version from -current to 8.1, or use it to search for which package a particular file is in, as in this case.
Check out slackpkg in /extra. With it you could have just set your mirror, used the command "slackpkg install slackware" which would would install any missing packages, and then:
"slackpkg upgrade kde" to upgrade easily.
slackpkg is a great tool for keeping your system up to date.
