I have reinstalled the packages, but BEFORE I did anything I removed all the references to KDE (.kde kdecache etc). So far I'm good (2 days), but the last problems took about 4 days to crop up.

A few hours ago I noticed the menu entry for Thunderbird had disappeared. Wonder what will magically
disappear next?
I'm on the road, again, for the next week or so, so it will be a while before I'll be able to download and install the 4.7.3 packages and see if that takes care of the problem.

BTW, Alien Bob was kind enough to make the 4.7.3 packages available today,
