Half life has been Linux-native for years now.

You don't need to buy it again. Just add your CD key to Steam.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that.
I have Steam installed but I play installing from cd and dvd.
My Half Life2 key came with Radeon 9660XT bundle, 12 years ago.
Sometime ago I found Unreal I executable for Linux but didn't work.

I, and my wife, play MapleStory which unfortunately, while being free-to-play, which is a nice plus, is not available for GNU/Linux, nor is it WiNE friendly due to the fact it uses a Ring-0 anti-hacking runtime. (I have been pestering them about a Linux port though.)

I'm a nostalgist. So, if I have enough time I just play my lovely childhood C64 games on Slackware using VICE. Mainly The Last Ninja.

For me Slackware is the last ninja in Linux territory.

Feel free to write a patch that allows installation of Slackware without a huge kernel, instead of complaining.

Or use any other Live ISO, it's just the XFCE variant that does not contain a hard drive installer.

Why does the XFCE variant not contain a hard disk installer? I want to keep the ISO size below 703 MB so that it can be burnt to a CDROM medium. That means I have to make decisions about what packages to put in and what other packages to drop. I dropped the huge kernel. And that means liloconfig will not be able to set you up with a bootable system. You can manually generate an initrd and edit lilo, but that is a bridge too far.
Live with it. Or write a patch for liloconfig that enables the user to generate an initrd interactively.

*** I used to recompile my kernels to customize them to the hardware. Mostly, to remove all the hardware I didn't have. Haven't bothered with that
for years. These days, the kernel is highly modular, and the stuff you don't have, doesn't get loaded. Exceptions include everything you need to read the root filesystem. - Jerry ( the OP )

Be glad Eric hasn't dumped Xfce for FluxBox to make more room.

Generic never worked properly for me, when I needed iso I just axed whole lot of stuff to include kernel src in sub 600MB.
Honestly, kernel-huge would be the last thing on my list of things to axe.

You do know you have to create an initrd for the generic kernel to work?

Yeah, got mkinitrd script with all required modules for each machine, but I rather take the time to build a kernel than use initrd.
I find a custom tuned kernel works best every time, therefore generic is no use and installer iso having kernel-huge is very much appreciated.

Now you're talking a worthwile change (for my case anyway)! But I find Eric's prodigious output to cover so many useful cases that I would never complain that I found one that wasn't covered!
