Installing Slackware on Toshiba laptop

Hi,
Any good or bad experience in installing Slackware as a dual boot on a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5206?

In the past I have had trouble getting the wireless running on my HP laptop which has a Broadcom card. So I'm interested in any success/failure with the Toshibas. Since I haven't bought the laptop yet, I don't know the specific wireless card it uses. I don't seem to find the wireless card specification on their website either.

If there are any recommendations for other brands of laptops, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Ash.

The only issue I can think of at the moment might be if Slackware (the version you install) has all the latest drivers and loadable firmware for the laptop.

Broadcom wireless adapters usually just require firmware to be loaded upon boot, as do many other brands, but once you have the firmware loaded or a driver built, there usually nothing left but to get packages and set it all up as you want it.

Hello.

I think Toshiba is the best brand of laptops (at least is what i think), i own one (Satellite) and is 3 years old, firt, i made a dual boot after i bought it (Bluewhite64 on those days, now Slackware64, since the first version) and it works great. It has an Atheros wireless card. But the model you ask, i don't know, maybe if you ask to show you the laptop, maybe win2 can tell you what kind of card the laptop is using (maybe a sticker on the laptop can tell).

Toshiba is great.

Cheers.

I, too, have had good experience with a Toshiba Satellite laptop that's now 4 1/2 years old and has multi-booted Slackware, Windows and just about anything else you can think of. However, my experience with several different brands of netbook/notebook is spotty on the wireless. Make sure you buy somewhere that you can return it, no questions asked - particularly since good Linux reports on it don't seem to be available yet.

No experience with your particular model, but had my worst laptop experience with a recent Toshiba Satellite L650D-063 (a good laptop if you're just happy with a pre-installed Win7, crap if you intended to run the latest Linux kernel on it, I posted about it here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...lision-879734/)

Had a good run so far with a Thinkpad, a Compaq and some HP laptops, most issues I ran into were wireless related, and usually resolved with appropriate driver or a kernel upgrade. As the other poster mentioned, make sure you can return it.
