Installing Java 5.0 on Ultima

Hello, utter newbie here.

I just installed Ultima linux this morning and am having trouble installing Java.
I am not to familiar with command line interface just yet, but I'm a fast learner.
That said...I don't quite understand how programs are installed, and what is going on behind the scenes.

I have downloaded the file (an rpm file...not sure what that means, but I understand I should be able to install such applications fairly easily).

In the terminal I got to the location of the file, but I when I used the command rpm, it said it didn't recognize the command.

So...sorry for lack of info, but can I try?
Thank you so much,

Lou

Ultima, like Slackware, uses .tgz files and not .rpm files. Theoretically you could convert a .rpm file to the .tgz format but I advise you not to. Try to find this software packaged for Ultima.

You can download a binary installer (it will install in any distribution, it doesn't need a package manager) from http://java.sun.com

Alright...got it started, and then error...

Extracting...
./jre-1_5_0_05-linux-amd64.bin: line 262: ./install.sfx.5990: cannot execute binary file

I tried it a second time and received the same message, only the 5990 was 6377.
Does this mean that this is a bad file?

Thank you again.

Do you've a machine with a 64bit processor? If you don't, you got the wrong file. Also be sure that you're executing it in a directory with permissions for your user.

If you've a 32 bit processor, you should download from http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/...actionId=noreg this one jdk-1_5_0_05-linux-i586.bin this is the Java Development Kit, get this if you plan to compile java stuff.
Or from http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/...actionId=noreg jre-1_5_0_05-linux-i586.bin that's the Java Run-time Enviroment, get this if you just want to run java programs.

By the way, if you're going to develop programs, you may want to get jdk together with netbeans (Sun's Java IDE): http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download-netbeans.html pick the first there, then: jdk-1_5_0_05-nb-4_1-linux-ml.bin
