Installed a New Realtek Card

i have slack 10 running on 2.6.8, just installed another realtek NIC on the box, when the box booted up, i got a message saying that it couldn't load up the interface eth0 and its aborting. i'm assuming i have to recompile the kernel for this card. the question i have is, i used make menuconfig and under networking options i don't see the option for a RealTek card... how do i do this ??? or is there any other way besides recompiling the kernel??

thanks for any replies.

TIA

Mine works out of the box with the the 8139too module and the 2.4.29 kernel. Check to see if you compiled this driver as a module in your 2.6.8 kernel. My card info from cat /proc/pci is below.

Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 16).
IRQ 11.
Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=32.Max Lat=64.
I/O at 0xdc00 [0xdcff].
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xde000000 [0xde0000ff].
Bus 0, device 12, function 0:

From lsmod:
Code:
8139too 13928 1
mii 2272 0 [8139too]
crc32 2880 0 [8139too]
HTH

If you want to recompile your kernel go to:
Device Drivers-->Networking Support-->Ethernet(10 or 100Mbit) and scroll down to find you card's model.

You might check and see if the specific chip set is currently supported by linux. Some realtek cards (my frigging laptop card) are not and so I have to use ndiswrapper.

What is the output of lspci on your system? I am also running a realtek chipset ethernet card so you probably just need to load the proper driver.

Here's the output of mine:

jcook@jcook:~$ /sbin/lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ALi Corporation M1647 Northbridge [MAGiK 1 / MobileMAGiK 1] (rev 04)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: ALi Corporation PCI to AGP Controller
00:02.0 USB Controller: ALi Corporation USB 1.1 Controller (rev 03)
00:04.0 IDE interface: ALi Corporation M5229 IDE (rev c4)
00:06.0 USB Controller: ALi Corporation USB 1.1 Controller (rev 03)
00:07.0 ISA bridge: ALi Corporation M1533 PCI to ISA Bridge [Aladdin IV]
00:09.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
00:0c.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139 C+ (rev 10) *** Note this line***
00:11.0 Bridge: ALi Corporation M7101 PMU
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV5M64 [RIVA TNT2 Model 64 /Model 64 Pro] (rev 15)
jcook@jcook:~$

If you can figure out the chipset (as noted on my line above) you can figure out which driver to load either from google or other documentation resources.

i just finished crashing my hard drive, i was trying to recompile the kernel and during the make bzimage process the box froze i left it there for like 2 hours but when it never did anything, restarted the box and during fsck the loader just stayed at 50% i left it there for a couple of hours, and when nothing happened, just mounted the HD using the original slack boot disk and saved the data. i'm gonna reload slack tonight, we'll see how that goes.
thanks for everyone's help!
