I thought the files were bzipped? No, actually I'm SURE they're bzipped because I just downloaded and installed them... successfully at that.

Here's how:

cd /where/gkrellm/is
bunzip2 gkrellm-2.1.12.tar.bz2
tar -xf gkrellm-2.1.12.tar
cd gkrellm-2.1.12
make
(assuming you're not root) su
make install

Everything's done!

To start gkrellm, just type gkrellm

And, if you wanna do the unzipping and untarring in one step, do:
Code:
tar xjvf gkrellm-2.1.12.tar.bz2
The j flag means run it through bzip2 first.

just a side note..
if you do a Dropline-Gnome install wich is pretty darn nifty and very easy. you will then have Gkrellm 2.1.8

http://www.dropline.net/gnome/download.php

Yeah there is... KSym, it is bundled with KDE (on Slack9 I believe it's under the System menu). It also uses gkrellm skins, but it looks really ugly! It doesn't render the "header" graphics properly.

I installed gkrellm and use it under KDE... it'll work with no problems if you have all the necessary GTK libs and headers (which anyone will most likely have because a lot of cool apps require GTK).

Man... people are trying to help you here, but you're not helping yourself. The most basic thing that someone who doesn't even use linux will know is that under *any* OS, if you want to do an operation on a file, you must be in the same location as the file to do so!

Let's say you save your file in /home/zykon... then cd /home/zykon first!

The above is myself releasing some built-up rage. Please forgive me if I offended you in any way.... Read the lines below: this is the important part!

I noticed that you have a .tgz file. The naming convention shows that it seemingly is a slackware package. Where did you get it? Anyway, installing a slackpack is even easier! Just do: installpkg gkrellm-2.1.9-i386-1.tgz as root.

go into KDE (startx if it's your default GUI)

bring up a "run" box, generally hold ALT and press F2

type gkrellm

click "Run"

you can configure gkrellm to remember where you put it on screen, and if you have it running when you logout, it should start up again when you start x again as the same user

Oh yes, where is it:
in the console type
whereis gkrellm
and hit enter
that's where it is

at console:
Go to where your theme file is (usually it's a tar.gz file)
tar -xzf theme_file.tar.gz (it will create a dir containing the theme)
cp created_dir/ ~/.gkrellm/themes/

[r-lass@localhost gkrellm-2.1.12]$ su root
Password:
[root@localhost gkrellm-2.1.12]# make install
install -d /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig
make: install: Command not found

It does make a folder! It's at ~/.gkrellm

In case you're wondering what ~ means... it is your home dir.

So cd ~ will bring you to /home/your_username

and cd ~/.gkrellm will bring you to /home/your_username/.gkrellm

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another advise, don't run KDE/any other window manager as root! Create a user this purpose!

adduser zykon (this is an example)
enter your preferred password
repeat the password

exit
login as the user you created
startx
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
