iDesk Issues

Okay there does not seem to be a lot of help available for iDesk when doing a search so hopefully someone knows how to fix this. I'm a WindowMaker user that just recently decided to try Fluxbox, got everything setup the way I like however I would like to try iDesk to put icons on my desktop.

I got it installed and everything seems to work except for the icons, the desktop changes with it just fine but the icons just pop up for a quick instant and disappear. Any ideas?

When running idesk I just get back the following.
Idesk starting in :0.0
[idesk] Background's source not found.

short reaction

I'm using iDesk in Mepis-Antix, in combination with IceWM and I'm very satisfied with it. In Slackware I use Rox-icons with fluxbox. That also works out well.

With regard to the errors you report, it doesn't ring a bell. But maybe it helps if you provide some more information. Did you place "idesk &" at the proper position in your /.fluxbox/startup file? What manager are you using for your backgrounds?

Yes I did place it in the startup with the &, but even so if I run it from the terminal it does the same thing. The background manager I was using is iDesk itself. Right now I'm not using iDesk though, just fluxbox itself and fbsetbg. I'll look into Rox-icons

Maybe the background is being applied as a layer above the root window?
You could try using something like "display -backdrop -window root IMAGE" (comes with ImageMagick )

That does make sense, when I did that command though I got
"display: no window with specified ID exists `-root': Resource temporarily unavailable @ display.c/XDisplayBackgroundImage/13607."

One thing to mention though is that when the background is set with fbsetbg the idesk wallpaper still goes over it.

My mistake, no hyphen in front of "root", so it would be "-window root"

Looking at the idesk wiki it looks like idesk uses esetroot to set it's background. Is it being instructed to load an image that it cannot find?

No I wouldn't say so, as soon as I load iDesk it loads the selected background just fine. Before I set the background it brought up another error (can't remember it but it was about the background) it now pulls it up just fine. Like I said the icons show up fine for like a split second as if they are being covered up, hm...

If I were you I would try to pull that other error up and see what was going on.

Also, looking here: http://idesk.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Idesk-usage I see that there is a Background.Source option in the ~/.ideskrc file that looks like it would be related to that error you got.

idk, I'll see if I can get it back but I had looked up the error and a lot of people had gotten it and it still worked for them. I'll see though if I can pull it up, I used a configuration tool that got that error to go away.

Oh, and here's my .ideskrc

Hm... Well it appears I do not have one. But this description sounds like I shouldn't need it

Background.Source: new Let you can define the folder where there are some images. If in the folder there aren't images or the folder didn't exist, then idesk looking for Background.File option. (Default: None).

Shrug. I guess I would copy a known good config file and see if you can't get it to work. At least that will rule out one possibility of things that could be wrong. Good luck to you. Sorry I wasn't of much help, never used the program.
