I just had a hard lock on slackware-current with nouveau driver.

Hello Everyone,

I just have a hard lock on slackware current while i was playing a game on wine. I had to hit the power button to shutdown. On the screen i could see nouveau repeating
and bunch of numbers next to it. Where can i find a log for this information? I checked some of the logs in /var/log but i could not find what i think i was looking for.

If you use a DisplayManager/Login/Chooser like kdm, sddm, or gdm they create an xsession-errors log. Another less direct source might be /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

However if you're playing any 3D games you really should be using the nVidia proprietary driver. Nouveau handles common desktop chores very well, even 2D videos OK, but gaming can be very demanding excepting the simplest of games. When you add in the complexity of running Windows games you really do need the proper driver as well as Vulkan DXVK.

You can install the SBO package once you verify what version your specific card requires but I personally prefer getting the NVIDI-foo.run file directly from Nvidia and dropping down to runlevel 3 to install it. That also has the advantage of offering to install 32bit compatibility libraries, checks and resolves any OpenGL conflicts, and offers to blacklist nouveau as it would conflict.

If that sounds interesting go here to use the search feature to suit your card and your system https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/

@enorbet I don't use logins. I usually do use the nVidia proprietary driver however i was just testing some stuff. I just would like to be able to help get the nouveau issue fixed. I found this in the Xorg.0.log

[ 27.987] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module fbdev
[ 27.987] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 437.197] (EE) glamor0: GL error: GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY in glTexSubImage
[ 437.197] (WW) glamor: Failed to allocate 12x16 FBO due to GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY.
[ 437.197] (WW) glamor: Expect reduced performance.
[ 2150.783] (EE) glamor0: GL error: GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY in glTexSubImage

And i think i found a backtrace in the syslog.

In that case you would need to get in contact with upstream.

Search "nouveau" on this page: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/late...hlight=nouveau

or take a look here: https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/Bugs.html

But notice the first paragraph on that page:
Quote:
If you are using packages from your distribution and are unable/unwilling to test the latest versions of all the pieces of nouveau, send the bug reports to your distribution and not directly to us. If you're using an out-of-date software version, our first question will probably be "does it still happen on latest".
