I finaly swaped the cd rom to my dvd and it wroed, and at the prompt i just installed everything (The ful install option) .

when i restarted the screen goes black and says LI as if it were about to say lilo, so i boot with the cd and get in to my installation using the bare.i root=/dev/hda1 noinitrd ro and it (after doing checks) finnaly goes to a login point saying darkstar etc etc and i login in as root and type in X, then the screen flickers, the login screen ( i would assume) goes all checkred and blured and then shows up with the curser (little x) behind a aqua blue screen, and it sits there and dosent move?

try startx instead of X :}

slackware doesn't come with any default x86config files. you'll have to run xf86config and give it what it wants. as long as you specified a window manager during install, you'll be fine. just in case, run xwmconfig...i think thats the command. if it doesnt work, run pkgtool and setup, near the bottom of the menu, and select the window manager config.

if you get LI read the documentation for lilo (google should get you to the online version). IIRC you will have to punch in description of your hard drive geometry into lilo.conf. This used to be quite typical on old boxes or noname boxes. Again IIRC it's BIOS's fault. You might as well check disk geometry settings in BIOS and compare them to what hd vendor says.

Again I might be wrong. I had this problem 6 or 7 years ago I fixed that but did not keep notes .

Anyway RTFM is a good way to start. LILO btw has nice doc. Which would be good thing to read anyway. I suggest just get your box to boot from harddrive first. The rest of you problems can be taken care of by proper X configuration.

I'll keep an eye on this thread. (I have insomnia) After you read docs and try anything come back and tell as what happens.

Ok awome i got in to KDE 3.1 (i think it was 3.1) and thats fine. but now its the biggestr drama i was hopping i wouldent have- getting the thing on the net.
Mandrake automaticly got me on the net, as did redhat and knoppix.
Vector and now this distro wont work for me.

I have no idea what to actually configure but im going through a Dolphin standard network card in to the lan port on the Netcomm nb1300.
Its broadbandf, luckily i have this ( my mothers pc) to ask you guys questions on. ill leave lilo for now as the net is the no.1 priority as my mother kicks me of here.

Great, i will give that a try- but where do i type that= is it through kde in the konsole- and what when i get to netconfig, im real new so a little annoying extra info wont bug me any

Yes type it into konsole or any other terminal emulator, easiest way I've found if you're using a single PC on a router is to choose whatever hostname and domain you want for your machine and use dhcp, then provided your router is set up correctly (hopefully) you will have internet access.

i just rebooted and typed at root@darkstar = /sbin/netconfig then just yped in dhcp etc and it worked

From not even being able to get in to KDE, from not getting lilo to work, from not getting to the net, i just corrected the internet through your help and figure out the lilo part my self (all i did was type in /sbin/liloconfig and it came up, i installed it to the MBR and it boots now with a red screen saying Linux with a boot prompt under it and all i need to do is type Linux and it boots this distro, only problem is that the login now says lol instead of darkstar lol cause i was impatient when i was configuring the network stuff and i didnt realise when it wanted the domain it meant the login prompt would change.

if i had money i would give you some lol.

well the lol is your hostname now but you can always change it by running netconfig again.

What I'm wondering is though that you didn't have to do this stuff (lilo and netconfig) during setup

I did but i didnt install it to the MBR, i installed it to the master block or w/e it was that it said, cause the MBR option had (Could be unsafe) bracketed next to it.

I have one last problem, I cant get the sound to work?

And by browsing the boards i see that my kernal could be out of date?
( i understand wht kernel is and does) but what would upgrading it do for me?
(now that i even know how)
im pretty sure at boot it says its 2.4 and i forge tthe other numbers?
