I Can't get X to start

I just installed Slackware 9.0, everything went good but when i start up my computer i just get a command line prompt to log in, when i do log in and i type startx my computer just freezes and theirs a bunch of colored lines on my screen. The same things happens when i type kdm, gdm, and xdm, and when i type startkde it says that it can't find it. The wierd thing is that i did a full install, can someone help me out?

Try running xf86config as root. For the startkde thing, are you trying to run X as root? This is a bad idea, and most of the X- related binaries are not in root's path.

As Kovacs suggested, xf86config is an excellent place to start to get your video card, monitor, etc. set up for X usage.

One thing I might add is that, in order to run xf86config as root you will want to either login as "root" from the login prompt or use "su -" to change to root. If you try xf86config when having just used "su" to get to "root" the machine may respond that it can't find xf86config.

At least this has been the case for me.
