I'm getting a EXT3 error

Okay I had this error when I had slack 10.2 now I just did a fresh install to 11.0 and don't get me started about disk2. Anyhow I'm getting the following error.

EXT3-fs error(device ide1((22,1)) ext_get_node_loc:unable to read inode block - inode=19857426, block=39714818 EXT3-fs error (device ide1((22,1)) in ext3_reserve_inode_write: IO failure.

I'm guess I might have a bad block on that harddrive but can someone give me a better idea? is ide1 /dev/hdb? please advice...

... we-ell, IDE0 = hda and IDE1 = hdb all right. Probably you should check the disk with the normal tools for the job.

Did the error vanish at any stage under slack 10.2? Or did you install slack 11 in the hopes that this would help (at least - partially)?

That is what I thought wanted clarification.... I searched the forum thinking I can't be the first one to have such an error and I found one a few that had somewhat similar errors one was exactly the same but the individual had just replaced it, and there wasn't a conclusion as to what was really the cause. but I did find a few things to run to help

so this is what I did...
root@sphereical:~# e2fsck -ck /dev/hdb
e2fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
Checking for bad blocks (read-only test): done 646
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity
Pass 4: Checking reference counts
Pass 5: Checking group summary information

/dev/hdb: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
/dev/hdb: 10727/30539776 files (3.3% non-contiguous), 23499638/61049646 blocks

and I'm hoping now that it has list of the bad blocks it won't use them any more and I will not have this error anymore. any other tools you can suggest.

okay so I found one of my drives are going bad but the other ones are also having problems... I did the following command and I get a segmentation fault...

here is the command

cp -Rp /backup/software /iso/backup/&

okay /backup/software = /dev/hdb

/iso/backup = /dev/hdd

both are 250gig HD... and I'm transferring from one to the other and it does this. can guess why? but if I map those directories under samba and get on windows machine and map them on my windows computer I can do a copy and paste and it works but the linux command gives me a segmentation fault. any idea please help...

okay I'm starting to believe that the error:

EXT3-fs error(device ide1((22,1)) ext_get_node_loc:unable to read inode block - inode=19857426, block=39714818 EXT3-fs error (device ide1((22,1)) in ext3_reserve_inode_write: IO failure.

is not a harddrive issue /dev/hdb but rather

IDE channel 1

so /dev/hdc & /dev/hdd

can anyone confirm this for me that has ran accross this please.

What is in /var/log/syslog or the command dmesg when these errors occur?

I didn't quite need all that data, but too much data is better than less. Just needed the "Uncorrectable Error" thing.

The situations is either a. you've got corrosion that's messing with the data transfer, or b. your drive is dying. For a., try taking all the connections apart and putting them back together, or more specifically, the HD IDE cables. For b., Pull the data off and replace immediately. How old are these drivers exactly? What manufacturer?

The have already tried A I could even replace the IDE cable. for B

HD ~ < 1 y/o it consists of maxtor and seagate ( yes I know )

but I just wanted a cheap file server that I could log into from anywhere on the
internet and upload my files. and to map some network drives.

thanks...

PS: I think it might the HD dying but is it just 1 HD it would be strange if it was 2 HD dying? could 1 HD cause these types of issues? thanks, Sul,R.

According to the errors, only hdc is dying. If you use a bad drive to test a good drive, you can't tell the difference without looking at the logs.

Download the diagnostic utility for the drive in question or
you can download this:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

It contains all of the different hd manufacturers diagnostic utilities maxtor, seagate, ibm, fujitsu, samsung, etc

Okay turns out it was the HD not the controller. the bad HD was making the controller act up. just posted this here so as to help anyone else that comes across this.
