For LaserJet P1005, you will need a ppd file and point to it when installing from cups:

https://github.com/koenkooi/foo2zjs/tree/master/PPD

If I understand you correctly, you end up with paper size being letter instead of A4. And the printer is set to use inches instead of millimeter. Am I correct?

Open your favorite web browser, enter as URL: localhost:631
Click on Administration - Manage printers (Or just click on Printers at the top).
Click on the printer installed
You'll find two drop-down menus, click on Administration and select Set Default Options
Check current settings and change what you'd like to change (Letter to A4 as an example)

As for EEPROM flash, I'm not sure what you'd like to find here. Update firmware?

Toner level: I don't think CUPS shows that info (I see nothing related to toner level here at least).

I currently don't have any HP Laserjet's installed. But I do have a Samsung CLP installed, and I can read its status in KDE - System settings - Printers

Hope that helps a little at least...
