How to set up the keyboard for English with accents.

kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU (slackware).

Some OSs offer the facility of "English with accents" for one to type in the keyboard (kb) and have the accentuated chars echoed to the screen, as well in the physical text consoles (ttyN) as in the GUI.

My kb is set for US English. How could I do to make it an English with accents kb? Regards.

Have a look at the Compose key:

There's also the US International keyboard layout. But why not use the American Spanish keyboard? You'll have to ask a fellow Slackware user for how to install them, though, or look at the Slackware web site.

Thanks for the links. I began programming in a time where American keyboards where the only ones there were in the companies I worked in. I remember by that time typewriters in my country had the British layout, along perhaps with U.S. layout typewriters.

I could never get used to the new Spanish keyboards, in vogue already by the 1990's, where half the special chars, =, ], *, and many others had been redistributed. Each time I have to use one of these I must spend half the time looking for the keys. I think the new layout was one of the stupidest things ever done.

When I have no remedy but to use one of these, I apply a software filter to change the layout. Who is ever to invent a variable name with an ene [a bar over the en]. And the commentaries? Well, write them in English or use en instead of ene [bar above the en].
