how to patch a kernel?

I want to patch my 2.6.1 kernel to the most recent version. Here are the steps I took:

1. got patch-2.6.5 from kernel.org
2. uncompressed it to /usr/src/linux-2.6.1 (got one file called patch-2.6.5)
3. moved to /usr/src/linux-2.6.1
4. ran ' patch -p1 < patch-2.6.5 ' in /usr/src/linux-2.6.5

After I got some errors it asked we what file to patch.

I don't have the time to download a full 2.6.5 kernel (56K here).

Do I need to get the patch files: 2.6.2, 2.6.3, etc...and apply them in order?

Also am I running patch incorrectly?

Thanks

yes, you'll have to download and patch 2.6.2, 2.6.3, 2.6.4, and then 2.6.5, they have to be applied in sequential order. have a look here

good luck.

Why not just recompile? Up to you but Id do it this way.. Not saying its better though.. That way if the patch screws up for some reason you have a working 2.6 kernel

Thanks for the help. I downloaded the patches , updated and recompiled and mostly everything works, just some minor problems that are easily fixed.
