How to install youtube-dl and ffmpeg

This is my first post from Slackware 13. I run Slackware on top of Mountain Lion OS using VirtualBox. Now, I am completely noob regarding Slackware but I use linux several years (distros like Ubuntu and Fedora). Who is the download manager here? How do I upgrade my system packages to the new ones?

For example, I need to download youtube-dl and ffmpeg. What I am supposed to do?

Cheers,
Panos

slackpkg in /etc/slackpkg is what most use for system updates.

Heres the other stuff

Read "man slackpkg" before using it.

This utility is intended mostly for official Slackware packages.

Slackware tools to manage packages : pkgtool, installpkg, removepkg, upgradepkg, makepkg, explodepkg.

Learn how to use it with "man <command_name>".

A slackware script is a script used to package a piece of software in such a way that it can then be managed with aforementioned commands.

To learn how-to use a slackbuild read the FAQ and the README @ http://slackbuilds.org.

Two rules of thumb:
1) Make a full install, so that you don't miss a dependency.
Remember that the slackbuilds provided @ http://slackbuilds.org always assume that you did a full install thus only packages not included in a full install will be listed as dependencies for every specific package.
2) Never compile and install manually a piece a software, to avoid messing up your system.
Find a Slackware package for it coming for a trusted source. You can safely install packages made by Alien Bob and Robby Workman, two of the main Slackware contributors.
If no package seems available, look for a slackbuild @ slackbuilds.org
Lats resort, ask here or learn how to make a package yourself.

Slackware has no "official" repository with thousands of packages like other distros - what you get on the DVD is all you get.
There are 3rd party repositories, but no download manager to manage 3rd party packages - Slackware just does not work that way.
Learn about the Slackware package tools: installpkg, upgradepkg, removepkg and then start downloading those 3rd party packages.

FFmpeg for instance: http://slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/ffmpeg/
VLC plays a Youtube URL without issues, no need for a youtube downloader: http://slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/vlc/

YouTube-dl and ffmpeg can be used together to rip audio from things like live performances that can't be found elsewhere. It's pretty nice actually, but I'm probably outside the scope of this thread.

Aah - wonderful when you have fast and cheap internet connectivity. No so down here at the bottom end of Africa ! Downloading youtube and using sneaker-net is the norm :-)

I will admit that youtube-dl is one of the few applications on my system not packaged with a slackbuild. It is a single file that can be made executable and placed where you wish in your path and subsequently easily updated with:

Code:
youtube-dl --update
